School Council

Information

The Student Council at Gaynes School is both established and successful. At Gaynes we actively encourage pupils to express their views and consult them regularly.

In recent years the School has achieved many changes and implemented many new initiatives, some examples include;

  • The creation of the bully box
  • Changes to school uniform
  • Changes to PE kit

Our School council has representatives from every tutor group, the prefects and our Havering youth counsellors. These candidates are elected onto council by the student body. We also recognise pupils who have made a significant contribution to the school council during their time at the school by inviting them to be councillor.

The Whole School council meet on a regular basis to discuss numerous issues and ideas. In addition to this our School Council representatives chair tutor group council meetings twice every half term. Some pupils from our council also attend local and national conferences associated with Pupil Voice.

At Gaynes we also have smaller sub committees that focus on specific topics. Currently we have four productive and successful committees.

1 - Charities – pupils work to raise money for various charities through fundraising initiatives. In addition pupils volunteer time to aid others. Successful campaigns include Jeans for Genes, Children in need and Saint Francis Hospice.

2 - Environment/Eco – We try to encourage all pupils to reduce the amount of energy they use and their Carbon footprint. We also work to keep the amount of litter in the School as low as possible through different campaigns. So far our work this year has earned Gaynes an Eco School bronze award!

3 - Teaching and learning - Allows pupils the opportunity to influence their curriculum and personalise learning. Successes this academic year include improving communication between staff and students.

Jessica Vann (8L1) “The teaching and learning committee are participating in a new project this year. We are being trained to observe lessons and work with staff to make teaching even better and personalised for the students. We don’t criticise staff but work together to give our views and ideas”

4 - Rewards – Pupils focus on improving current systems and identifying additional ways of rewarding pupil effort and achievement. Successes of this committee include establishing an end of year rewards trip and designing an exciting new rewards system that will hopefully be launched in the summer term.

Jessica Vann (8L1) “In rewards committee this year we aim to update the current rewards system to ensure all pupils are motivated to consistently achieve”
