School Governors

WHY DOES THE SCHOOL HAVE A GOVERNING BODY?

All schools have a Governing Body to represent the public in the running of the school.
Governors bring perspectives from ordinary life and work with the staff and the Local Authority to help secure the best possible education for the young people in the school.
Governors have important responsibilities like managing the school budget, overseeing the curriculum and appointing staff.

WHAT DO GOVERNORS DO?

Members of the Governing Body work as a team to:

  • Select the headteacher
  • Ensure that the national curriculum is taught
  • Make decisions regarding the schools budget and staffing
  • Make sure that the school has provisions for all pupils, including those with disabilities and special needs
  • Help to plan the schools' future development/direction
  • Governors are accountable for the performance of the school

The above tasks are not always easy, but they do affect the interest of the pupils, staff and how the school is perceived by parents and the local community.

WHO'S WHO

Our Governing Body includes 18 governors elected or appointed in four different categories:

  • Parent governors: elected by parents of pupils.
  • Staff governors: elected by staff (plus the Headteacher, ex officio)
  • Local authority governors: appointed by Havering councillors
  • Community governors: appointed by the governing body.
